THE SCHOOL & COMMUNITY PROJECT

This is a great opportunity to take part in a significant research enterprise that involves working with school log books.

In England & Wales school log books were mandated to be used from 1862 and in Scotland from 1870. It was the responsibility of the head teacher to complete the log book to record events within the school. These included such topics as visitors to the school, names of the teachers and sometimes pupils; lessons being taught, community events such as fairs and children's outings, and the visits of the school inspector; even the weather was recorded on occasions.

The project has two parts, the academic study and the transcription of the entries part.
The academic study involves the use of a database, either Microsoft Access or Open Office version 3 Base.
The straight forward transcription of a log book can be undertaken using any word processor application.
